AN MP is backing a national campaign to “make smoking history.”
Warrington South MP Helen Southworth (pictured) has added her support to the 3,083 people in the town who have urged the Government to “make smoking history” for the benefit of children and young people.
She is also supporting Smokefree North West’s campaign for a tobacco free future for children and young people in her constituency and the rest of the region.
Figures released by the campaign show that more than 6,000 people in the North West contacted the Department of Health calling for a long-term plan to protect future generations from the harm smoking causes.
Dr Rita Robertson, director of public health for Warrington, said “Smoking kills 331 people in Warrington every year but the response from the public and support from Helen Southworth is further evidence that this is a key public concern.
“It is only by tackling the uptake of smoking in young people that we will break the inter-generational cycle of tobacco-related health inequalities we face in the North West today.”
