TEENAGE volunteers have given a makeover to the Walton Hall Children’s Zoo to make it more child-friendly.
The group, aged between 16 and 19, have improved the look of the zoo with signs on site, leaflets and the Information Centre have all be redesigned to improve the experience for children, and visitors with learning difficulties or visual impairments.
A colourful mural using tactile textures has been added and a fun poem about the animals at the zoo created.
The group have also designed new child-friendly signs, that include makanton (a form of sign language), for the animal enclosures.
New trail leaflets have been produced for youngsters to follow and colour-in as they make their way around the zoo.
Zoo ranger Liz Rowland said: “The group have worked extremely hard and all their work has helped to make Walton Children’s Zoo more accessible to our diverse community. The commitment of the volunteers and the end result is fantastic”.
She said many of the volunteers, working with V in Warrington, had visited the zoo as children. Anyone interested in finding out more about youth volunteering and V in Warrington should text 07846883616.
