Dramatic learning opportunities!

WARRINGTON schools are turning to the theatre to help teach youngsters about learning opportunities available to them after they reach the age of 16.
Seven schools in the town are playing host to a team of professional actors from Yorkshire company CragRats, a
learning and training organisation that specialises in theatre in education.
The project has been organised by the youth support service Connexions Cheshire and Warrington Ltd with funding from the Learning and Skills Council.
Connexions commissioned CragRats to put together a programme that uses theatre and interactive workshops to equip Year 11 students with an understanding of all the learning routes available to them post 16 such as work based learning, college or sixth form.
Nearly 7,000 pupils across Warrington and Cheshire will benefit from the project.
Connexions Information adviser Lesley Farrell, said: “All young people learn in different ways. By appealing to their
various learning styles, we can make a real difference to their education and encourage them to take responsibility for
their future and achieve their potential.
“This type of learning experience offers an inspirational and exciting way to engage with young people and we hope it will encourage students to keep their options open.”
The main objectives of the Connexions project are to maximise the take up of learning and training after the age of 16, provide information on apprenticeships and special diplomas, and raise awareness of the various websites that students can turn to, such as www.wayahead.uk.com and www.fasttomato.com.
The CragRats sessions involve pupils observing a series of theatrical scenarios and taking part in an interactive workshop, which explores the issues raised in the performances in more depth.
Lesley commented: “The sessions will also deal with issues such as communication, personal responsibility, confidence and self-esteem, in order to help students develop a set of competencies and qualities that will enable them to make the most of their opportunities at school and in the future.”
