Everest hero's Mum goes mountaineering

EVEREST conqueror Stuart Peacock, who has climbed the world’s highest mountain twice, has found a new convert to mountaineering in Warrington – his Mum.
At 66, widow Mavis Peacock sets out later this month to trek the mountains of Nepal.
She won’t be attempting Everest – but with eight of the world’s 10 highest mountains to choose from, she’ll get ample opportunity to show she’s got a head for heights.
Mavis, from Great Sankey, will be accompanied by her friend, Margaret Owen, also 66 and from Warrington.
The pair became close friends to support each other after their husbands passed away within a few months of each other six years ago. Now they are both members of the Warrington Stroke Club.
Their friendship has taken them to many parts of the world, including Australia, Alaska, New Zealand, Singapore and India.
But their previous climbing experience is limited to the Lake District.
Mavis said: “We were supposed to visit Nepal when we went to India but we were advised against it because there were riots at the time.
“I have always wanted to go there and told Stuart what had happened.
“The next thing he had arranged it through contacts in Kathmandu. I just can’t believe it.
“We are both really looking forward to the trip which will be a real adventure – not just going on a tour.”
The two women fly out to Kathmandu on November 24 and then drive out to Sankhu, once an important settlement on the old trade route to Tibet.
Then the serious business of mountain trekking will begin with the pair leaving behind luxury hotels to stay in farmhouses and mountain shelters.
Stuart, who is hoping to scale Everest a third time, becoming one of the few men to climb the mountain by two different routes, said: “I’ve advised them to take head torches in case of power cuts – but they are more concerned about taking a pack of their favourite tea bags.”
