High Sheriff visits Warrington Club

HIGH Sheriff of Cheshire Kathy Cowell was special guest at the Warrington Club, where she outlined her role in the community.

Kathy, who spent 10 years working in Warrington during a 24 year career at the Cheshire Building Society, was special guest of club member Norman Banner DL.

During her visit Kathy outlined the historic role of the High Sheriff, which dates back over 1,000 years.

Appointed by the Monarch their role used to involve looking after the shires, issuing punishments to felons and collecting taxes. Any short fall in taxes had to be paid from their own pockets, resulting in a lot of aggressive tax collection tactics.

These days the role involves declaring the start of the legal year, entertaining High Court judges to dinner and attending a variety of events around the county – all funded from her own purse.

“It is a huge honour and pleasure to be High Sheriff for Cheshire,” said Kathy, who is focusing on the volunteering community during her year in office. She is currently looking for nominations for Volunteering Awards she has launched.

Now six months into her term of office she has already attended around 100 events including a recent visit to Warrington Youth Club, which she found to be “inspirational.”

Vote of thanks was given by Club Chairman Percy Beckley.
