Work speeded up as roads deteriorate quicker than expected

RESURFACING work is to be brought forward on two deteriorating roads at Warrington after a re-assessment has alerted highways chiefs to the fact that they are falling into disrepair quicker than expected.
Work on East Avenue and West Avenue, Orford, is to start sooner than planned because of the unforeseen deterioration in the roads.
Originally, plans for the area focused on structural maintenance schemes in North Avenue, Lathom Avenue and Shaws Avenue, as part of the council’s £40m highway maintenance investment programme.
But the accelerated rate of deterioration on East and West avenues means they will be dealt with alongside the other roads.
Funding for the East and West Avenue improvements will not come from the highway maintenance investment programme, but from a separate pot of funding earmarked specifically for road resurfacing.
Cllr Hans Mundry, the borough council’s lead member for transportation,  said: “The funding for the roadworks schemes was always about targeting those areas with the greatest need.
“After conversations with ward councillors, and thorough assessments of the condition of road surfaces in East and West Avenue, we decided that these two roads were in much more urgent need of work than they had been previously.
“It’s about being adaptable and delivering a highways improvement scheme which fully meets the needs of our communities.”
Ward councillors Mike Hannon, Kerry Morris and Morgan Tarr have welcomed the news.
Work on North Avenue, Lathom Avenue and Shaws Avenue, East Avenue and West Avenue is due to start between February and March.
