A VOLUNTEER couple at a Warrington care home were deeply moved when residents and staff threw a surprise party to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
Ray and Verner Hopple, who have been volunteering at Holcroft Grange, the CLS-run home at Culcheth, thought they were on a routine visit.
But they were greeted with gifts, champagne and a surprise party to congratulate them on their special day.
The couple visit Holcroft Grange every week, with their guide dog Bunty, to chat with residents and to lend a helping hand with activities and events at the home. They also do a great deal of charity work in and around Warrington.
Verner said: “It was a fantastic surprise – we were both so happy that all the residents were there and so excited to celebrate our special day. We’d like to say a big thank you to the staff and residents at Holcroft Grange for the party and the lovely gifts.”
Ray added: “We think it is important to give something back, and would recommend volunteering to anyone. It’s good to come and speak to the residents and the atmosphere is always really nice.”
Nicola Newens, activity co-ordinator at Holcroft Grange, said: “Everyone at Holcroft Grange would like thank Ray, Verner and Bunty for all their hard work and involvement with the home.
“Their selfless efforts have a hugely positive impact on the lives of our residents and never fail to brighten up their days. The surprise party was the least we could do to show our appreciation for their kindness, and we were delighted share in the celebrations on their special day.”
