FIRE crews fought their way into a blazing house at Warrington early this morning after reports that an elderly man was trapped inside.
Flames were leaping from the windows of the terraced house in Forster Street, off Orford Lane when fire engines arrived at 5.30am.
Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and carried out a thorough search. But no-one was found.
Arson is suspected and police are investigating the incident.
A Fire Service spokesman said: “Neighbours said an elderly man lived in the house so we had to go in. But there was no-one there and it now appears the man may have moved out a few days ago.
“The fire appears to have started in the ground floor living room and we strongly believe it was started deliberately.
“The house was gutted – but fortunately the fire did not break through to the adjoining properties.”
Fire crews tackled the blaze with hosereel jets and used a ventilation unit to clear smoke from the property.
