Police warning to bonfire vandals

POLICE are warning people in Warrington to take extra care during the Bonfire Night season and to report any anti-social behaviour.
They say incidents of youth nuisance, criminal damage and illegal fires traditionally “rocket” at this time of year.
Officers from the five neighbourhood policing Units that cover Warrington are carrying out high-visibility patrols in the run-up to Bonfire Night and taking positive action when necessary.
They are also working with Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, to reinforce safety messages including raising awareness of the law surrounding fireworks and fire, and the seizure of fireworks from those not permitted to possess them.
Chief Inspector Martin Cleworth said: “There seems to be a minority of people who use this time of year as an excuse for anti-social and criminal behaviour – for example nuisance bonfires, misuse of fireworks and deliberate fires.
“These people may think they are just having harmless fun but the reality is far from it and they need to realise that this type of behaviour has a major impact on the local community.”
Officers and those assisting the campaign have been visiting local schools to talk about the safety issues. They are warning that those who ignore the rules are at risk of fines, having items confiscated or being put before the courts.
Chief Inspector Cleworth said: “We would urge people to be sensible and to not cause a nuisance – think about the potential impact of your behaviour on local residents.
“We would also encourage residents, who want to attend a firework display, to attend an official local display.”
The team has also visited premises licensed to sell items such as alcohol and fireworks to ensure licensing rules are not being breached. And parents are being encouraged to take responsibility for their children during the bonfire season.
Chief Inspector Cleworth said: “We would encourage parents across Warrington to make sure that important safety messages are given out to their children. Parents also need to talk to their children about the possible consequences of their actions on Bonfire Night – which could have serious repercussions.”
