M0RE than 30 pupils from schools in Warrington, Halton and Cheshire have been award school science prizes by the Daresbury Laboratory.
The prizes recognise outstanding achievement in science and this year marked the 13th such prize event at the laboratory.
Pupils were nominated by their teachers, some for their academic excellence, and others for outstanding achievement in science. They were each given science books to a value of £30 to encourage their future development as scientists.
During their visit to the laboratory, the pupils and their teachers got a rare opportunity to visit some of its facilities, including the unique SuperSTEM microscopes that are enabling scientists to study atoms within materials in a way that has never before possible.
They also saw Daresbury’s ‘ALICE’ particle accelerator facility, which offers the prospects of new cancer treatments.
Pupils were then joined by their parents for the awards ceremony when their books and a certificate were presented by Professor Colin Whitehouse, deputy chief executive of the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
Tony Buckley, head of communications at the laboratory, said: “The prize scheme provides an excellent opportunity to reward the talent and enthusiasm of youngsters working hard to increase their science knowledge and skills. Hopefully this recognition will act as a springboard to each of them in their future studies and career path”.
