New laws to protect consumers

TRADING Standards chiefs in Warrington have welcomed new laws to protect consumers from high pressure sales in their own home.
The regulations, which came into force at the start of the month, give further protection to consumers when they enter into contracts signed in their own home or place of work.
Now, anyone who spends more than £35 with a trader has the right to cancel most contracts within seven days, whether the salesperson has cold called or been previously invited.
Previously, this right to cancel only applied to deals agreed during an unsolicited visit.
The advice from Trading Standards is to think very carefully before agreeing to have any work done or goods delivered within the seven days to retain the right to cancel
More advice on consumer rights can be obtained from Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or by visiting Warrington Trading Standards’ website at www.tswarrington.co.uk
Traders who require further information on the new regulations can download guidance from the department for business enterprise and regulatory reform website at www.berr.gov.uk
