Travellers camp arrives at Chapelford

A TRAVELLERS camp has arrived on land at Chapelford, Warrington, earlier today, just two days after a site at Risley was vacated.

Police have already visited the site, which is being watched over by a local PCSO and Warrington Borough Council have confirmed they will be visiting the site first thing in the morning.

A total of eight vehicles moved onto the land at Dakatoa Park at around 2.30pm today.

A similar number of vehicles were moved on from Silver lane, Risley on Sunday.

Earlier today Warrington Borough Council said they would not make “knee jerk reactions” to deal with problems with travellers, after previously receiving criticism from Warrington North MP Helen Jones.

Commenting on the Silver Lane encampment a council spokesperson said: “Warrington Council reacted in a timely and proportionate manner to the arrival of Travellers at the site. We have a common sense approach to this issue which means we always look to negotiate with travellers. Our Gypsy and Traveller liaison officers have had great success across Cheshire adopting this approach.

“We try to avoid a knee-jerk reaction of legal notices as the cost to Warrington’s council tax-payers would be considerably higher if we took this approach. It would also take longer to reach a resolution.

“Our team responded immediately and visited the encampment to carry out welfare assessments, which is our statutory duty.

“It was agreed that the encampment would leave on Sunday, which they did, and we have had no issues reported to us. We work in partnership with Cheshire Police and it was agreed that they would visit the encampment regularly and monitor the situation.”

  1. Well there a surprise and who really didn’t see that one coming.
No action against them for breaking through the barriers at Silver Lane at weekend again and taking root because they kindly said they would move on. And now they have moved but just onto another place withing the borough. Laughable really and about time the council got tough but of course they wont as these people are a ‘minority’ with ‘special needs’. Yes I can see how it may be hard for them but they choose their way of life and looking at thei cans and vehicles half the time they are probably better off than most of us are money wise. Saying that my personal opinion is that the so called Liaison Officers aren’t really helping the situation either. Why don’t they just tell them that Silver Lane is a NO GO area for example and if they continue to break through the barriers they WILL get in trouble. Obviously though the more they do it the better chance they have of getting this transit site in Warrington and a couple more boxes ticked to pave the way.
After though….I wonder if Helen Jones knows were the possible locations for the alleged ‘needed’ transit site are are….will she tell or do we still all have to wait to find out ?

  2. What not in helens back garden? If we did we would be arrested why are they not? They will deface and leave rubbish over a kids play area and then go away. The police jump all over kids who mess about on the park and they don’t shit in the woods like this lot.
