THE plight of many Warrington people suffering “real hardship” because of rising Council Tax bills was highlighted at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham.David Mowat, the Prospective Tory Parliamentary Candidate for Warrington South, raised the issue after Shadow Chancellor George Osborne revealed his plan to freeze council tax for two years if a Conservative government is elected.
Mr Mowat said many Warrington people were experiencing real hardship because of higher-than-inflation Council Tax increases.
The cause, he claimed, was that the Government was piling more requirements on councils while at the same time offering lower-than-inflation grant support to local authorities.
He said: “Last year in Warrington we saw that the council managed costs prudently but were forced into a higher-than-inflation rise because of a withdrawal of support from Whitehall.
“I am delighted that George Osborne has now offered a real partnership to local Councils which will mean that we should now expect no Council Tax rises for the first two years of a Conservative Government”.
“This will help elderly and vulnerable people right across the town.”
