WARRINGTON’S first purpose built bus-only road opens in Birchwood on Tuesday, May 31.
The new bus link connects the A574 Birchwood Way from the Faraday Street roundabout to Ordnance Avenue, allowing shorter and faster bus journeys between north and south Birchwood.
The bus services using the new bus-only road will be the 17C, 25, 28 and the shuttle bus to Birchwood station for Birchwood Park employees.
Access to the bus lane is restricted to buses and emergency services vehicles only.
Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras will capture the registration plate details of all vehicles passing through the bus gate and owners of vehicles not permitted to use the bus lane could face a £60 penalty charge notice.
Cllr Hans Mundry, the borough council’s lead member for highways, transportation and public realm said: “Birchwood is a popular residential and business location, as well as a busy commuter route, and we hope that the bus link will provide for more reliable bus services, assist economic growth by reducing congestion, and encourage sustainable travel choices.
Operations director Network Warrington, David Blainey, said: “Traffic congestion is a serious problem to contend with when trying to provide a reliable bus service in Warrington. The opening of the new bus gate will enable buses to avoid some of the most congested roads and assist Network Warrington in improving the quality of bus services to Birchwood Park. It is very much welcomed by the company.”
Faraday Street bus lane is one of the three traffic improvement schemes within the “Birchwood Pinchpoint” project, full details of which are available at: warrington.gov.uk/birchwoodpinchpoint

  1. They should have spent the money in enforcing the existing taxi, bike and bus lanes around the town.
There’s been a mobile enforcement camera on Academy way by the market recently. Totally the wrong place. Should have been put around the corner near the market car park entrance.
Needs to be placed on Scotland rd, Legh st and at the bottom of Bridge st as well.
This town is a joke when it comes to traffic enforcement.

  2. “Traffic congestion is a serious problem to contend with when trying to provide a reliable bus service in Warrington…” says Cllr Mundry. Traffic congestion per se, is a serious problem we all have to contend with as we go about our daily lives. It has been poorly prioritised and unresolved in and around Warrington for far too long. As has trying to find a reliable local bus service. We are still trying to work out who benefits from WBC’s bus company. Just like successive administrations’ approach to our failing infrastructure, this tiny stretch of new road for “the shuttle bus to Birchwood station”, doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the problem traffic problems most of us face every day.
