Bid to make Warrington a Town of Peace

WARRINGTON’S outgoing Mayor Geoff Settle is bidding to leave a lasting legacy after nominating Warrington to become a Town of Peace.

Goeff, who stands down as the town’s Mayor today (Monday) was inspired earlier in the year when he joined the Mayor of Oldham’s visit to the Peace Centre.

During the visit he was asked to look into the possibility of Warrington Borough Council signing up as a Town of Peace.

Nick Taylor CEO of the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation for Peace based at the Peace Centre, was instrumental in getting Oldham to sign up, so it’s almost come around in a circle.

Geoff said “I was asked by the Mayor of Oldham if I would put Warrington forward as a Town signing up to the Bruxelles Declaration – Pledge to Peace and follow their example.

“I feel that this is long overdue especially with the work that Colin and Wendy Parry, Mike Hannon, Rev Steven Kingsnorth and many others have done. In addition we now have a growing interest in applying to become the next City of Culture.”

Geoff remembers that he was working for United Utilities when Liverpool won its Capital of Culture and the prestige and economic benefits that came with the accolade. The organisation also gave him time off as a volunteer to work on community projects such as re-decorating a community hall and building a garden in DIY SOS style, it was great fun.

He added: “I have now passed on the request and associated paper work to Katherine Fairclough, WBC Deputy Chief Executive who is considering the case and hopefully it will be approved.”
