Railway station unlikely to reopen

IT is extremely unlikely that Glazebury Railway Station will ever reopen, according to Warrington Borough Council.
The news has disappointed members of Culcheth and Glazebury Parish Council – but delighted some Glazebury residents.
In a letter to the parish council, borough chiefs say a “lack of passenger demand” would not justify the cost of stopping trains at the former station, near the Chat Moss Hotel.
In fact the cost of rebuilding the station – estimated at more than £5 million – is more likely to be the deciding factor.
Coun Sue Bland told the parish council the borough’s letter was disappointing.
“It doesn’t sound as if we are likely to get anything at all,” she said.
But a Glazebury resident told Culcheth Life: “No-one has thought fit to ask local people what they would like.
“People talk about re-opening the station as if it was still there, just waiting for someone to unlock the gate.
“In fact, there is virtually nothing of the old station remaining. It would all have to be rebuilt.
“There is also nowhere to provide parking for people using the station.
“There are very few Glazebury people who would use the station. Most people would be driving in from other areas.
“Warrington Road is already clogged with traffic at peak times and would grind to a standstill. There would be nowhere for people to park.
“People living near the Chat Moss would certainly be opposed to the station re-opening.”
