A SPORTS student from Warrington had the opportunity to use his skills in the USA when he was employed as a football coach at a children’s holiday development camp.
Jon Leatherbarrow, 18, of Paddington has just returned from a three-month stay in Cincinnati, Ohio.
He has recently completed a BTEC Sports National Diploma at Priestley College, Warrington, and plans to take a degree course at Liverpool’s John Moores University next year.
Jon got interested in coaching at Priestley College through the Football Development Programme.
He said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my course at college and discovered that I enjoyed coaching through voluntary work during my two years of study.
He is now working part-time for Premier Football Coaching in the UK.
“The visit to the States was one of the most unique in my life and has certainly helped me become more mature and responsible,” he said.
“The most enjoyable part of the trip was travelling and meeting new and interesting people as well as experiencing a completely different culture. I would recommend the programme to any young coaches looking for experience. The respect you are given, makes the job very rewarding.”
Jon is one of several students who have visited the USA to carry out sports coaching.
Priestley Sports tutor Rich Donnelly said: “It’s great to learn that Jon and our other students enjoyed their time in the United States. It is a positive and rewarding experience which will stay with them for the rest of their lives and one which we will continue to encourage among our new students.”
