Tackling climate change by text

TEXT messages are one of the secret weapons for tackling climate change at Warrington-based fit out, housing and maintenance company Morris and Spottiswood.
Site and office-based staff are receiving energy saving tips

on their mobile phones from the company’s chief executive Chris Saxton as part of the firm’s “green” initiative.
All 600 of Morris and Spottiswood employees are being given energy efficient light bulbs to take home, and are getting the chance to eat locally sourced food at lunchtime to illustrate the importance of carbon footprint awareness.
A series of competitions is also taking place asking staff to come up with energy efficient ideas that can be rolled out across the entire business.
Three of the best ideas will be selected to roll out across the company, and the people behind the ideas will each win a mountain bike. There are also home recycling centres up for grabs to encourage people to recycle their waste at home.
Mr Saxton said: “To combat climate change we need action across the board – at our workplaces as well as in the home.
“By organising a week of green-themed activities we are hoping to enthuse our entire team and get everyone thinking of ways to reduce their own carbon footprint.
“In the current economic climate it’s never been more important for all businesses to act on climate change and it makes perfect business sense to empower our people to do their bit both at work and at home to help save the planet.”
The initiative follows the company’s decision to draft in environmental specialists to help them put together a sustainability strategy which will be rolled out across the business later this year.
