CHESHIRE’S new Warrington based Police and Crime Commissioner David Keane has vowed to carry out his election pledge of putting “more bobbies on the beat.”
The Penketh based borough councillor has also pledged to return to effective neighbourhood policing.
Labour politicians across Cheshire West and Chester and Warrington have been celebrating since late on Friday as Cheshire elected its first ever Labour Police and Crime Commissioner.
In a tense afternoon that ran through late into the evening, David Keane was ahead in the first ballot by a few thousand. Police and Crime Commissioners are elected using the supplementary voting system, so with no single candidate obtaining half of the vote it was clear that the result would be decided on second preferences. In a nail-biting conclusion to a long day the final result was announced shortly after 8pm.
Commenting on his victory David said: “People in Cheshire are clearly turning to Labour to represent them in Westminster, on their local council and now as their Police and Crime Commissioner.
” I am delighted with the huge honour that local residents have bestowed on me and I will work hard to deliver on my election pledges for more bobbies on our streets and a return to effective neighbourhood policing.”
