BUDDING Jamie Olivers are set to appear at secondary schools across Warrington as every pupil will receive a chance to learn to cook to help promote healthy eating and nutrition.
Already more than 80 per cent of schools in the town have achieved National Healthy Schools Status (NHSS) and education and health chiefs are keen to maximise opportunities for promoting healthy eating and nutrition.
Warrington Children’s services will continue to support the Warrington Health Schoools programme to increase the numbers of schools which have NHSS status.
Schools have to achieve four core themes to achieve such status.
These include providing a whole range of nutrition related activities, projects and guidance, free school meals and free fruit and veg for those who qualify and to encourage youngsters to have school meals.
The schools must also meet nutritional standards in an effort to curtail obesity among school children.
Schools are also encouraged to develop breakfast clubs, with breakfast being considered vital in supplying vital nutrients to avoid cases of undernourished children, or malnutrition.
Warrington Children’s Services will continue to work with schools to ensure they maximise opportunities for promoting healthy eating and nutrition.
They will also be working with warrington Primary Care Trust to support overweight children aged from 7-13 to make life changes which will improve health and well being.
