A WOMAN died in a horrific crash on the M56 motorway near Warrington late last night.
Only one vehicle was involved – a red Mercedes estate car – which crashed into the safety barrier at the Lymm interchange.
Fire crews from Warrington, Stockton Heath and Wilmslow were involved in a desperate struggle to release the 51-year-old woman from the badly damaged car.
She was eventually cut free but was pronounced dead in an ambulance on the way to hospital.
Firefighters had to use cutting gear to cut away the side of the car to release the trapped woman who was, at that time, still alive.
A spokesman said: “It was a major impact and we had to remove part of the barrier to get at the car.”
Police said the woman was from the Sale area of Greater Manchester.
The motorway was not closed during the 20-minute battle to release the woman, but lanes were sealed off.
Police are seeking witnesses of the crash who should call 0845 458 0000.
