A FORMER soldier who is doing a charity walk around the country raising money for the Poppy Appeal and Combat Stress stopped off in Warrington on his travels.

Darren Greenhalgh, aged 48, started his walk last May and had covered most of Wales when he suffered a stroke which put him out of action until September.

Then against doctors advice he got back on his feet and is again walking around the country.darremn-greenhalgh-warrington

During his visit through Warrington he was given a room for the night by local supporter Julie Francis, who has a son in the army and has been campaigning for improvements to Warrington Cenotaph.

Mr Greenhalgh, who lives in Bolton, did two tours of Northern Ireland, with the 1st Battalion kings own royal borders..now known as Duke of Lancasters, suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and wants to raise awareness for Combat Stress, a veteran’s mental health charity.

Julie said what Darren was doing was remarkable and he deserved as much support as possible.

“He loves walking so decided to do charity walking for combat stress.”
