Town stages its own Olympic event

AS the handover for the London 2012 Olympics took place in Beijing, Warrington had its own ceremony to mark the occasion.
The town, along with many others throughout the country, had a handover ceremony of a special flag to mark the London games.
The handover took place at the Halliwell Jones Stadium – which has been selected as a potential practice venue for football in 2012.
And the Olympics link does not end there. Two other sites have been earmarked as possible training venues for Olympic teams – Birchwood Leisure and Tennis Complex for indoor volleyball and Victoria Park for athletics training.
A borough council spokesman said the town was planning to get fully involved in the Olympics and a series of events are being planned for the next four years.
