Fire chiefs' appeal after vandals strike

FIRE chiefs at Warrington today issued an appeal to the public after vandals started two fires which could have had serious consequences.
Both fires involved wheelie bins in rear alleyways. They were within 150 metres of each other and broke out within 20 minutes of each other. Firefighters had only just got back to the fire station after dealing with the first when the second was reported.
The fires were at the rear of Ford Street, off Manchester Road and the rear of Marsh Street.
No damage was caused to property other than the bins. But a Fire Service spokesman said: “This was obviously someone playing cat and mouse with us. They probably think it is a huge joke.
“But a serious could fire could break out elsewhere while we are responding to these nuisance jobs and this could cost someone their life.
“We would ask members of the public to keep a look out for vandals and also place their wheelie bins as securely as possible.
“We don’t want some idiot’s joke to end up in someone else’s death.”
