WARRINGTON Rower Richard Egington was celebrating a silver medal in the Beijing Olympic Games today.
The first Warrington born Olympian was a member of the men’s eight boat team which missed out on gold by just two seconds to Canada, with America coming third.
The former Lymm High School student, now aged 29, started rowing at Warrington Rowing Club as a teenager.
Richard and his team mates entered the final as the fastest qualifiers but were unable to peg back the Canadians who set off at a break neck speed.
In a thrilling final, Richard and his team mates, who were almost a full length behind the Canadians at the half way stage put on a strong challenge in the closing stages but missed out on gold by just two seconds.
Meanwhile fellow Warringtonian Olivia Whitlam missed out on the medals after coming sixth in the women’s pairs rowing final.
