A BENEFIT cheat from Warrington has been left with a bill of more than £1,000 to foot after he falsely claimed money from the borough council.
Mark Donnelley, of Marsh Lane, Penketh, defrauded the borough council of housing benefit to the sum of £966 and council tax benefit of £252, totalling £1,218.
He pleaded guilty at Warrington Magistrate’s Court to claiming benefit without declaring that he was working.
Donnelly, 23, failed to attend any interviews with the council and was prosecuted under section 111A of the Social Security Act for failing to notify a change of circumstances, namely that he was working.
He was sentenced to 50 hours unpaid work and ordered to repay the money with addition charge of £60 for costs.
The court was told Donnelly made the false claims over a period of five months, from May to September last year.
