MEMBERS of Warrington Rotary club have set off from the Manchester Ship Canal in Warrington to the Grand Canal in Venice as part of a “banger rally” helping raise funds for three charities.

The aim is to cover eight countries in five days in cars worth less than £333.

Past President Eric Russell and four other club members are currently travelling in two old bangers covering 1,250 miles over five days – aiming to raise £3,000 to be split between three charities, St Rocco’s Hospice, St Joseph’s Family centre and the international Rotary appeal to help eradicate polio.

They are competing in the annual Motorscape Rally Road trip, with two other Rotary clubs.

They have been joined on the trip by Mayor of Warrington Geoff Settle’s charity champion mascot #Teddygeorge.
