THERE was a full-scale emergency on Thelwall Viaduct, near Warrington early today when a highways worker was stranded in the basket of a cherrypicker while carrying out essential maintenance work.
The man was perched on the vehicle’s extendable arm, some 130 feet above the Manchester Ship Canal.
Fire and rescue crews from Warrington, Stockton Heath and Knutsford were sent to the scene at around 4am to rescue the stranded man.
It is understood the cherry picker mechanism suffered a failure.
A hydraulic platform from Stockton Heath Fire Station was used to bring the man to safety.
A spokesman for Cheshire Fire Service said: “A man was rescued from a cherry picker which was stuck at height on the Thelwall Viaduct. The crew used the hydraulic platform to get to the man and get him down from the machine.”
