YOUNGSTERS from Warrington’s Penketh High School are hoping they will have a winning garden at this year’s RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park – with the help of bakery workers who have swapped flour for flowers!
Following a theme of great British myths, legends and pastimes, the pupils have spent month designing their own small garden for the “Front to Front School Gardens Competition” involving 18 schools from across the North West.
Northwich-based bakery Roberts are sponsoring the contest and sent a team of volunteers to help put the finishing touches to the garden.
The plot – known as “Warrington Through Time” – celebrates the rich heritage of the town and features a strong link with the school’s current topic of transport.
Penketh High is competing against four other secondary schools and there are also 12 primary schools competing.
Roberts’ family members Mike Roberts and Karol Roberts were on hand to help the children create their novel gardens.
Keen gardener Karol said: “We are really pleased to sponsor this fabulous project, which is all about getting out into the community and making youngsters enthusiastic about gardening. The children have obviously put a lot of hard work into designing their outdoor schemes and it was fantastic to be involved in helping them to create these amazing gardens.”
Mike Roberts added: “This is a superb local event and we’re very proud to be part of it. We work alongside many schools up and down the region, so it’s very exciting for us to be involved in this terrific programme and engaging with even more children in our heartland.”
