POLICE, fire and ambulance services were involved in a dramatic rescue after a man plunged into the River Mersey at Warrington early today.
The man entered the river at Bridgefoot and was struggling in the swiftly flowing water when he was spotted by a passerby at about 2.30am.
Police alerted the fire brigade and four appliances were sent to the scene, including an aerial appliance from Stockton Heath.
A rescue boat was in the process of being launched when the man, assisted by police officers, managed to get out of the river.
He was then taken to hospital for a check-up before being questioned by police. He is not believed to have been seriously harmed.
A Fire Service spokesman said it was not known how the man came to be in the water. He was understood to be Polish and had difficulty in explaining what had happened.
