Police blitz on untaxed vehicles

A CAMPAIGN to target untaxed vehicles has been launched in Warrington.
Police from Warrington East Neighbourhood Unit and enforcement officers from the DVLA hit town. And in just four hours 10 vehicles with no tax or out of date tax discs, were clamped.
Owners of clamped vehicles face a fee of £200 for the clamp to be removed or must tax the vehicle within 24 hours. If they fail to do this the vehicle will be seized and towed away.
PC Paul Jukes said the operation was part of an on-going campaign by the DVLA to crack down on the number of untaxed vehicles on the road.
He said: “If left for a long period of time then these vehicles turn into an eyesore and can attract anti-social behaviour and suffer from criminal damage. They can also become a target for thieves.
“These sorts of operations can also severely disrupt the activities of criminals who often further their unlawful activities in low-value untaxed vehicles.”
Local residents had complained to police about untaxed vehicles and the campaign was in response to that. Officers on patrol regularly take details of vehicles they see without discs, or with out-of-date or suspect discs, and pass them on to the DVLA.
PC Jukes said: “We hope this sends out a strong message that people should not break the law in terms of their vehicle. People who take vehicles on the road illegally cause problems for all other road users, and they need to understand that they are likely to lose their vehicles.
“Law abiding motorists, who regularly keep their tax disc up-to-date, can rest assured that action will be taken against those who believe they can get away with it.”
