Stairway to art success

A MATURE student from Warrington has been climbing the staircase to success after her work was selected for a prestigious exhibition this summer.
Jeni McConnell, 45, from Ackers Road, Stockton Heath, has just obtained a BA Hons degree in fine art, and has had one of her works selected for the “Best of Merseyside” exhibition later this summer.
Her latest work, entitled “Material paradise: looking up the attic stairs” is on display at the Williamson Gallery in Birkenhead as part of this year’s Wirral Art School Degree Show and consists of a staircase made out of old chest-of-drawers and wardrobes to represent forgotten memories of childhood.
Jeni said: “Through the senses of seeing, smell and touch the presented objects and aromas allude to past homes and their contents – those long forgotten spaces and places where we felt safe and secure with our daydreams and familiar delights.”
Her work is based around philosopher Gaston Bachelard, who describes childhood homes as a place to feel safe and secure to daydream and imagine.
Anyone wishing to see the display can do so by visiting the Williamson Gallery Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm.
The display is open until Sunday, June 29.
