Council pledge on waste strategy

WARRINGTON Borough Council has revealed more details of its waste strategy – together with a pledge of a big public consultation exercise to be launched at the end of the month.
The “Waste Watchers” campaign is being launched on June 30 with a three-month public consultation that deals directly with the issue of waste and landfill.
Town Hall chiefs say the days have gone when people can simply fill their bins with whatever rubbish they like and leave it out for collection
In future, residents will be expected to think about how much waste they produce and how much of it can be recycled rather than buried on landfill sites.
Warrington currently recycles about 33 per cent of its waste – but this is not enough. The council faces tough financial penalties if it does not meet government recycling targets.
“Waste Watchers” will enable people to study the council’s proposed waste strategy in detail and fill in a short questionnaire.
This can be done:
1. Online at www.warringtonwastewatchers.co.uk
2. At Contact Warrington in Horsemarket Street
3. By calling Contact Warrington on 01925 443322 to ask for a hard copy or to speak to someone from the waste minimisation and recycling team.
Emails for more information or to make comments can be sent to [email protected]
Following the consultation, Warrington will consider all the feedback and decide on the next steps to finding a solution.
The council aims to increase household recycling to 40 per cent by 2010 and to 55 per cent by 2020 – and this means cutting the waste produced by each household to 25kg per household per week by 2010 and to 21kg by 2020.
that we do not currently do.
Coun Alan Litton, the council’s executive member for environment services, said: “To do nothing really isn’t an option as landfill is running out now, not in hundreds or thousands of years. There are also UK and European regulations that will impose very significant financial penalties if we continue to use landfill.
“A wide range of options and solutions exist that we can use to help reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill sites.
“There has already been an initial consultation exercise which has helped shaped our proposals and we hope that as many people as possible will give us their views during this wider consultation process.”

  1. Does anyone know what the council plans to do with all the smaller, blue bins currently spread across Warrington when the new larger bins are delivered in September? I trust they will not be simply binned (if you will excuse the pun!
