HOT on the heels of Post Office closures in the Warrington area a village is now set to lose its sorting office.
It is only a few weeks since the Post Office confirmed plans to close the post office at Booths Lane in Lymm, with other Post Offices in the area earmarked for closure despite a public outcry.
Now in a new blow it seems that the Lymm sorting office will also be shut down.
The jobs of 18 postman will be moved from Lymm to Atrincham.
Warrington South prospective parliamentary candidate David Mowat said: “This is likely to cause delays in deliveries for residents and businesses.
“It seems particularly insensitive so soon after the closure to be pressing on with still more cuts to mail services”.
Local councillor Sheila Woodyatt added: “I think it absolutely appalling and an absolute shambles.
“This means postmen are going to be sent in cars and buses to Altrincham to sort the mail and bring it back to Lymm. This is not a service!
“The parish council are writing to the Post Office expressing our concern and asking them to please reverse their decision.”
The Post Office claim they are having to close the Lymm Sorting Office on health and safety grounds.
Coun Ian Marks added: “I am appalled at the treatment of our local postmen. They have been treated in a very poor way by the Royal Mail and it’s not good enough. I cannot believe there will not be a harmful effect on the delivery service in Lymm.
“I ask the Royal Mail to delay the imminent closure of the Lymm Sorting Office and open up proper consultations with the postmen and the local community.”
