Time to take a break

A WARRINGTON councillor is calling for an extra bank holiday to end the 30 year wait for another day off.
Borough Councillor Paul Kenny believes introducing the new public holiday would bring families, communities and the nation closer together.
The last bank holiday was introduced by the Callaghan Government on May 1, 1978, which is now known as the “May Day” bank holiday.
The Fairfield and Howley ward councillor joined the TUC in backing the calls for an extra day to be given.
They want a new community day bank holiday in October to celebrate and encourage community activity.
Coun Kenny said: “We’ve gone 30 years without a new bank holiday and the UK is now languishing behind the rest of Europe. A new bank holiday would give everyone much-needed time with friends and family. Timing it around late October would also create a welcome pit-stop to break the four-month stint between the August bank holiday and the Christmas break.
“Public holidays are an immensely popular part of life in the UK. These national days of celebration also play a vital part in ensuring that we have a proper balance between our working lives and the rest of our lives. We need time to pursue our hobbies, to exercise, to learn, to get involved in our local communities and to have fun.
“But a new bank holiday should not just be a day off work; it should be a special day that brings the nation together. What better cause for us all to celebrate than our great tradition of volunteering.”
