Design students earn national praise

FOUR graphic design students have received national plaudits after they were successful in a national competition run by WorldSkills UK.
Julia Smith, Daniel Bamford, Lewis Kennedy and Jasmin Brewer were among a group of BTEC National Diploma students from Warrington’s Priestley College who completed a recent project that was used both for their coursework and the competition.
WorldSkills UK operate skills competitions for young people and adults in the country and the Priestley students were successful in one of their artistic challenges.
The group was set the task of re-branding the corporate image of an architects’ practice in London which involved designing a logo, business card, letterhead and compliments slip.
After making the top 14 candidates nationally, the four Priestley students have now been invited to display their work in an exhibition at a two-day live final in Milton Keynes. The final will also give the quartet the opportunity to compete for a chance to represent the UK in Canada at a worldwide competition set to be staged next year.
Jasmin said: “I was pretty amazed to be recognised in this way as I wasn’t sure how my entry would be received. It was an interesting process to be involved in and I’m pretty flattered by it all.”
Julia added: “I guess success like this doesn’t happen very often, so we’re all very happy to be selected for the national final. It’s certainly something that will look good on a CV and we’re looking forward to our trip to the live final.”
Paul McConnell who tutored the students through the application process, said: “For Priestley to have four students in the top 14 nationally for this particular WorldSkills competition is a pretty amazing effort.
“I congratulate the students on their success and hope that the live final may bring even richer rewards for them. We shall all be keeping our fingers crossed.”
