DRIVERS in Warrington are being told to belt up by police following an exercise on the town’s busiest routes.
Approximately 79 per cent of drivers stopped by officers along Lovely Lane, Folly Lane and Kerfoot Street, weren’t wearing a seat belt and were forced to watch a 15 minute road safety video, or face being ticketed.
The interactive presentation enables drivers to make more informed decisions about their driving habits and hopefully take a more responsible attitude when driving in future.
This event was coupled with another initiative by Cheshire Police who used special number registration equipment and cameras to target illegal and speeding drivers.
Overall, the aim of the initiatives was to reduce the number of people killed on busy roads in the town.
The borough council’s executive member for Environmental Services, Alan Litton said: “It was alarming the number of people stopped for not wearing a seatbelt; they fail to understand the consequences of being in a collision, even at low speeds, where a seatbelt can save them from death or serious injury. After watching the videos they realised why wearing a seatbelt not only protects themselves but any passengers in the vehicle as well.”
