Controversial bus lane to go?

TOWN Hall chiefs have put the wheels in motion for plans to remove a controversial bus and cycle lane in the town centre
The council’s Traffic Committee is recommending the lane, which runs on Winwick Road outside the Halliwell Jones Stadium and Tesco superstore, be removed.
Reasons for the suggested removal are because Tesco has received planning approval to create an additional traffic lane southbound from their access to the Pinners Brow junction.
This could lead to increased traffic congestion and slow the flow of traffic if the lane remains, according to the council traffic experts.
Members of the Warrington Cycle Campaign have slammed the proposals however, saying the lane offers a considerable safety benefit to cyclists travelling between the town centre and the north, forming a key link in Warrington’s emerging cycle network.
They say they are all in favour of improving safety for motorists in Winwick Road – but not at the expense of cyclists.
The council and Tesco will share the cost of the scheme should it go ahead.
