AN international style icon and will be visiting Warrington tomorrow (Friday) to promote her latest creation as Golden Square bids to become the first plastic free zone in the UK.
Peaches Geldof, daughter of Band Aid world poverty campaigner Bob, will launch her new must-have eco-friendly bag, “Eco Chic”, exclusively to the Golden Square Shopping Centre.
The high street shopping centre approached her to design the re-useable carrier as part of their Bin the Bag Campaign.
Initially, 5,000 bags will be available in the centre, with 500 being given away to shoppers tomorrow, and the remaining 4,500 being available from Debenhams and the Information Point at a cost of £3.50 each.
All profits will go to the Sea Turtle Trust, Peaches’ chosen charity.
She said: “When Golden Square approached me about designing the bag I jumped at the chance to help out as the project combines my love of fashion and gave me an opportunity to support my favoured charity The Sea Turtle Trust.
“Scientific studies have shown that plastic bags are damaging to marine species, including whales, dolphins, seals, puffins, fulmars and turtles. Some marine species, such as the endangered leatherback turtle, a summer visitor to Scottish waters, mistake plastic bags for their normal prey of jelly fish, with deadly results. Many marine species are now affected by the minute toxic particles that plastic items, including bags, are reduced to by photodegradation, leading to a weakening of their immune system.
“I enjoyed creating the design for the bag. My aim was to produce something fun and colourful that would look great with this summer’s hot colour looks.”
Marketing Manager for Golden Square, Ian Cox, added: “Our Bin the Bag campaign aims to eliminate plastic bags from Golden Square and encourage shoppers to be more environmentally friendly.
“The introduction of an alternative eco bag is our first step in this initiative, Peaches Geldof is known for her individual style and so we’re honoured that she agreed to design the bag for us.
“By launching the eco bag we are giving our customers the choice to say no at the till when they’re offered a plastic bag and providing them with a more stylish alternative, designed exclusively for Golden Square by fashion icon Peaches Geldof!”
Peaches will be in the centre from 12 noon onwards.
A number of bags are also being given away on the Golden Square website www.goldensquareshopping.co.uk
