Former council chief dies

MIKE Sanders, former chief executive of Warrington Borough Council and the man who led the authority towards unitary status, has died after a lengthy illness.
Mr Sanders, 62, who was chief executive from 1989-1997, lived at Irby, on the Wirral, had previously been the town’s chief planning officer and had worked as a planning officer with Wirral Borough Council and as a government planning inspector.
Coun Ian Marks, leader of the council said,: “We are saddened by the news of the death of Mike Sanders.
“Mike was passionate about his job as chief executive and worked hard for the people of Warrington during his time in office and will be remembered fondly for this.
“Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”
Mr Sanders quit as chief executive unexpectedly just before the council acquired unitary status.
He said at the time: “Warrington needs new blood and new ideas to lead it into the next century.”
He said he could not give the long term commitment that would be needed when the change to unitary status come in.
Mr Sanders was a fully qualified gliding instructor and hoped to spend more time piloting his glider.
