Takeaway shop plan thrown out

JUBILANT residents are celebrating after controversial plans for a hot food takeaway shop were thrown out by Town Hall chiefs.
Members of Warrington Borough Council’s development control committee rejected an application to change the use of an existing shop in Orchard Street, Fearnhead.
More than 80 residents had lodged objections to the scheme and so many turned up at the Town Hall they could not all be accommodated in the council chamber.
The proceedings were relayed to the overflow crowd outside.
It was the fifth time plans for a takeaway shop have been refused in Orchard Street since 1983 – the most recent of which was in December 2005.
Officers had recommended the scheme be approved – and pointed out that none of the earlier refusals had ever been tested at appeal.
But local councillors Colin Oliver (pictured) and Scott Wilson backed the objections of 83 residents and 36 people who signed a protest petition.
Residents’ fears included anti-social behaviour, noise, smells, litter, traffic problems and road safety.
Coun Oliver said the shop was in a quiet residential area, close to houses and the proposals would be detrimental to the amenities of the area.
Coun Wilson said there were already a number of takeaway shops in the area and the proposal would only lead to anti-social behaviour and litter
