AS one of her final gestures as Mayor of Warrington, Coun Celia Jordan has managed to get the lights switched back on at each end of Warrington Bridge.
She came to Warrington 45 years ago from Liverpool – and one of the first things she noticed was that the ornate lights on the four corners of the bridge were not working.
Recently the bridge was refurbished, with new railings, a fresh paint job and other features.
Coun Jordan managed to persuade officers to replace the broken lights – even though they had previously been given a low priority.
She said: “I am very pleased with the work. I am delighted to see the bridge looking as good as new and suitable for this great town.”
A Town Hall spokeswoman said: “All street lighting within Warrington is replaced on a priority basis and wherever possible it takes advantage of including specialist feature lighting within specific scheme areas.
“On this occasion the refurbishment of the bridge has allowed the authority to replace the ornamental lighting as part of the overall scheme. In doing so has enhanced the look of the area. This would not have been achieved if the two had been carried out separately.
“The council’s aim is to carry out work that adds value and improves the look of the borough for the benefit of its residents.”
