A UNIQUE “tree” has been planted in an orchard – and will never need watering.
The Apple Turnover is a specially commissioned sculpture on the banks of the Bridgewater Canal in the Oughtrington Community Orchard at Lymm.
Last year the orchard project received funding from the Local Heritage Initiative and Warrington Borough Council Arts Grants which enabled it commission North West sculptor Adrian Moakes to produce an original work of art.
Adrian started the project with a workshop for a group of Year 9 pupils from Lymm High School. He worked with 60 pupils to develop ideas for the sculpture.
He started by showing youngsters pictures of the orchard and models of his previous work. Then using a wide variety of materials the group spent a day making experimental scale models which were used to develop the final design for the sculpture.
Adrian was impressed by the creativity of the youngsters, and the eventual idea was a metal, three metre high, tree sculpture.
Once sited youngsters from Oughtrington Primary School’s two reception classes made “cherry blossom” to decorate it.
The next event at Oughtrington Community Centre and the orchard will be a Family Fun Day on Sunday June 29 during Lymm Festival. Visitors will be able to see the new community centre building and the sculpture.
There will also be a range of stalls, a barbecue and refreshment stalls and children’s activities. The day is being run in conjunction with the Lymm Festival “Open Gardens” initiative so visitors will be able to combine the two events.
