Soccer team aims for Europe

ENGLAND could still be represented at the European Championships this summer, thanks to the continued success of a Warrington football team.
Car dealership Warrington Volkswagen has seen its five-a-side team beat all who stood in their way to reach the finals of the Castrol 5s Championship, and have a strong chance of taking the top prize, representing the UK at UEFA Euro 2008 in Austria this summer.
The tournament, which will see the Warrington team compete against other sides from across the UK and Ireland, runs alongside the professional UEFA Euro 2008 competition and will see UK representatives take on teams from Greece, Slovakia and Russia in the finals.
To get to that stage, the Warrington team will have to with-stand the pressure of playing at Villa Park, in Birmingham, when they compete in final on Sunday (May 11).
Team captain, Craig Williams, a director at the dealership, said: “It seems unreal that we will be playing at a prestigious venue like Villa Park for the chance to compete against European opposition. Needless to say, we’re all absolutely thrilled!
“I’m very proud of the whole team. We have really pulled together and worked hard to get this far, and I believe that with our successes behind us, we have what it takes to go all the way to Vienna!”
Open to teams from franchised dealerships across the UK and Ireland, the Castrol Professional Championship regional rounds were organised by the oil manufacturer to celebrate its sponsorship of the UEFA Euro 2008 competition.
In addition to playing in the tournament, the overall winners will receive tickets to one of the quarter final matches of the professional tournament.
