Historic bomber to fly again

THE historic Vulcan bomber – one time mainstay of Britain’s nuclear deterrent – could take to the air again, thanks to backing from a Warrington company.
CCTV specialists the AD Group, of Daresbury, sponsoring an ambitious project designed to return the last remaining Vulcan to the skies.
The group will supply state-of-the-art FlightVu video recorders and specialist CCTV cameras to provide valuable in-flight footage from the historic aircraft.
It is hoped when the project is complete, the aircraft that first flew in 1952 and was the mainstay of Britain’s nuclear deterrent force during the Cold War, will be able return to the airfields and wow crowds at air shows.
Vulcan bombers have a previous link with Warrington. They used to occasionally land at the Burtonwood air base on training exercises – and Burtonwood was one of a number of airfields designated for use if the nuclear strike force ever had to be dispersed in the event of a deteriorating international situation.
The “Vulcan to the Skies” project has been running for 11 years but it now thought to be only weeks away from obtaining a Civil Aviation Authority licence enabling Vulcan XH558 to fly again.
AD Group chief executive Mike Newton said: “The Vulcan is undoubtedly one of the pinnacles of British aircraft design and engineering, ranking alongside Concorde and the Harrier, in terms of milestones in our aviation history. Thanks to the efforts of the ‘Vulcan to the Sky’ team the restored Vulcan rekindles memories for those of us who lived through the Cold War era and for the younger generation should bring an important part of our history to life.
“We are delighted to have been able to support this fantastic project, the professionalism and dedication of everyone involved is to be commended.”
AD Group already has a keen interest in aviation through its AD Aviation and AD Aerospace subsidiaries.
Mr Newton added: “To have now been given the green light to fit our FlightVu system in the near future in such a unique aircraft is a real privilege.”
