Piece of history up for sale

AN old building which forms an integral part of the history of education in Warrington is likely to be put up for sale in the near future.
The church hall adjoining Penketh Methodist Church, in Chapel Road, Penketh, will be sold to help fund construction of a new combined church and hall to replace the existing 148-year-old church.
The future use of the building will depend on the purchaser but local councillor Linda Dirir (pictured) hopes it will be appropriate.
She supported demolition of the old church to make way for a new modern combined worship/community centre when it was considered by the borough council’s development control committee.
But she wants to see the church hall preserved.
She said: “In many ways, the hall is a more historic building than the church. It was a day school and a Sunday school and the first of its type in the Warrington area.
“It is an attractive building in good condition and we need to try and ensure it is preserved.
“It is regrettable that the church has to be demolished, but it is in a poor condition.”
The plan to demolish the church divided the local community with some in favour but others strongly opposed.
