Keep safe at work

PUPILS at a Warrington school are getting innovative training to help them to keep safe on work experience or in their first job.
Youngsters at Great Sankey High School are among the first in the country to be awarded a new qualification from the British Safety Council.
The Entry Level Award in Workplace Hazard Awareness is aimed primarily at 14 to 16 year olds and provides vital information on health and safety issues in the workplace.
Statistics show that a young person is seriously injured in a UK workplace every 40 minutes and 66 under-19s have been killed at work in the last decade.
As part of the programme Year 10 pupils compile personal portfolios covering topics such as hazards, safety signs, personal protective equipment and fire.
Head teacher Alan Yates said: “This is a very positive development to ensure the safety of school students in the workplace. The pupils have benefited enormously from this opportunity and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
