Chattering teeth – at minus 50 degrees

CHATTERING teeth were to be the least of Steve Evans’ worries, as he embarked on a visit to Baffin Island where temperatures plummeted to minus 50 degrees.
Steve, from Stockton Heath, visited The Dental Academy before the trip for a check up and to seek further advice.
Dr Kevin Dobbs informed him that because of the harsh climate, any fillings he had could fall out, or change shape in his mouth, due to lack of heat.
Steve then had to have all the vulnerable fillings replaced by specially protected ones, leaving him with a safe smile for the trip.
Dr Dobbs said: “When Steve came to see me and spoke about the realisation of his lifelong ambition to visit the Arctic we agreed to sponsor the dental work before and after the trip.
“It is not often that you get the opportunity to treat people who take their dental work to these extremes and it is interesting to monitor the effects of the severe climate on his teeth.”
Temperatures dropped to minus 50 degrees in strong, icy winds as Steve and the group took part in a 150-mile trek round the island, which is situated near Greenland.
Steve returned home with a smile on his face, which he puts down to the work carried out by The Dental Academy.
He said: “The Dental Academy kindly agreed to do any work I might need on my return. Thankfully, this wasn’t necessary as the pre-exploration work Dr Dobbs performed was so good my teeth remained strong and all my fillings remained intact.”
