Yellows win away

Spalding 0 Warrington Town 2
TOWN travelled to lowly Spalding looking to take all three points back to Cantilever Park.
Despite loosing defender Steve Everett in the warm up, The Wire began brightly with his replacement Karl Brown having an early attempt on goal.
Spalding soon came into the game but resolute defending, especially from captain Tom Spearitt ensured that Argentinean goalkeeper Diego Bassanini, was a virtual spectator early in the game.
Indeed it was Spearritt who put the away side in front, powering a back post header in the back of the net following a Kevin Towey corner.
Both Towey and Brown went close to doubling Warrington’s lead soon after, but Town had to make do with a one goal advantage at the break.
It was Spalding who started the second period the brighter, with winger Danny Hargreaves failing to hit the target from six yards.
The Yellows were still creating chances however as Thomas Lamb was next go close, placing his shot over the bar following good work by Gavin Lynch.
Towey should have made it two soon after, but couldn’t find the target from close range, before defender Brian Holmes produced a fantastic last ditch challenge to thwart Hargreaves.
Bassanini was then called into action, making an excellent low save to keep Town’s lead in tact.
Warrington should have wrapped the game up in the 87th minute, when midfielder Nicky Prescott blasted wide of the target following a good Town counter attack.
Town did wrap the game up in injury time, when the unmarked Lynch finished smartly from 12 yards after good work by Carl Rendell.

  • Town: Bassanini, Holmes, Brown, Spearritt, Fitzsimmons, Prescott, Towey, Smith, Rendell, Lamb, Lynch.
