Residents facing
traffic nightmare

by Lesley Wilkinson

TRAFFIC problems on a number of roads in Warrington are a “nightmare” for local residents and now highway planners are set to investigate complaints.
Grappenhall councillor Mike Biggin (pictured) said scores of people from the roads between Knutsford Road and Chester Road have been plagued by difficulties for years.
Speeding cars where children play, damaged cars, nowhere to park and insufficient access for emergency vehicles are just some of the concerns.
Now following many complaints Warrington’s highways department is to review the area and are canvassing residents for their views. Suggested schemes include traffic calming measures, one-way roads and residents-only parking.
Coun Biggin said problems had been made worse since satellite navigation, as lorries are often directed from Stretton, down East View – which he says is a “very narrow” road.
In Euclid Avenue, a wider road, he said residents have problems with speeding cars cutting between Knutsford and Chester Roads.
“Many people are worried as their children play out and they are concerned for their safety,” he said.
“Traffic in these roads has been a nightmare for many years and is getting worse,” he added. “It is really important that people respond to the consultation to get something done.”
He said residents are concerned that parking problems may be made worse if a proposed supermarket, on the site of a former garage on Knutford Road, opens.
“People in East View already find it very difficult to park, cars have been damaged and they are worried that emergency vehicles would not be able to get down,” said Coun Biggin.
“In many of the roads people have been blocked in, or had cars damaged. It is really important we get the traffic problems sorted out,” he added.

The successful team beat Woolston in a final described as “tense and thrilling” in Blackpool by 6 points to 4.
A team spokesman said: “The Cobras side spent their first season on the end of some large defeats but all credit to this bunch of 18 young men they have stuck together through thick and thin and shown some real commitment to their team and sport by training three times a week in every weather without fail.”
The team’s fortunes have improved and this season they have worked hard and gained some good victories.
Members are working to raise funds for a week-long tour of Scotland next year. They will represent Warrington and Crosfields by playing games against their Scottish counterparts and taking part in team-building and life skills exercises.
Volunteers from the team are asking businesses in Warrington to help them support the team with a donation towards the costs or to sponsor their kits in return for an advert on the kit.
